New Open-Access Book on Indigenous Peoples' Rights from Columbia University
Columbia University's Academic Commons has published a new book-report, free to read and download: Fulfilling the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Resistance, Resilience and Hope. We Continue!, edited by Rodolfo Costa Machado, Inger-Ann Omma and Elsa Stamatopoulou (Columbia University Academic Commons, 2026).
The book grew out of the 2025 International Program on Indigenous Peoples' Rights and Policy at Columbia University. It brings together the experience and knowledge of the program's participants and instructors, human rights advocates and community leaders from around the world, and it was written for the people who will carry this work forward.
Elsa Stamatopoulou is the former Chief of the Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the former Director of the Indigenous Peoples' Rights Program at Columbia University's Institute for the Study of Human Rights. She was the faculty mentor of our President, Platon Shamaev, during his fellowship in the Human Rights Advocates Program at the Institute in fall 2019.
Indigenous peoples' rights are part of our Human Rights & Education program. We are glad to share this book and encourage advocates, students and community organizations to read it and pass it on.
